James Robert Pickering “Our Jimmy” arrived on November the 9th 1940. He was the second son to Ivy and Walter Pickering. Mother said he looked like trouble the minute he was born.
He was the second of three children, the oldest being Alan Walter Joseph born November 1935 and the youngest being Betty Ann who was born December 1941. Jimmy tried his best to get rid of her but he failed.
Our family lived in Weston Street and 'Our Jimmy' started Bloomsbury Street Junior School at the age of five and was no trouble but was immediately marked by teachers as one to watch.
James at the ‘Maypole Day’ at Bloomsbury Street Junior School, he won first prize in the ‘catch the train’ race.
He finished his schooling at Loxton Street Senior School at the age of 15 and started work as an apprentice mechanic at Foseco in Long Acre, Nechells.
He was a well liked chap was Jim and he had lots of friends, together they set up a skiffle group and used to play in the Eagle pub on the corner of Weston Street and Schofield street. He was master of the Jew’s harp and a Skiffle board but didn’t quite make the palladium!
At the tender age of 17 Jimmy was struck down with a brain haemorrhage but he fought back and made a full recovery.
At the age of 20, Jimmy met and married Leah Taroni, daughter of the coal and scrap merchants of Nechells. They became the proud parents of three daughters Deborah, Dawn and Angelina and they lived in Aston whilst the girls were young.
Some time during the mid 60’s they moved to Kitts Green.
In 1971 Jimmy had another brain haemorrhage and was taken from us at the age of 30…..
