Ted was born on 1st July 1910 in Dawlish Road, Bournbrook, the fifth child and first son of Charles and Lily Harris (nee Smith). Charles, a general labourer who helped to build Old Joe at the University, had married Lily, a chocolate worker, in 1904.
The Harris family continued to live in Dawlish Road, with Ted going to Tiverton Road School before leaving to work at the Austin. He continued as a sheet metal worker until retirement in 1975.
Ted met Win Robins, and they married in June 1946 after he returned from war service with the Territorial Army. Ted was one of the last to be evacuated from Dunkirk, and in later life he became a member of the Birmingham Dunkirk Vets.
Three children, David, Mary and Christopher, were born to Ted and Win, and they lived quietly but happily in Win’s family home in Shirley Road, Cotteridge.
Although never a very demonstrative man Ted loved and was proud of his family, working hard to ensure they had an annual two week holiday. When at the age of 69 the first of his two grandchildren was born he was moved to tears.
Ted died on 1st December 2004 after a short illness.
